How and when to plant potatoes

The potato is the most cultivated vegetable in the world! Do you also want to get started in its culture? With the crisis, would you like to have 100 potatoes? So follow the guide (for potatoes not for 100 potatoes)!

When to plant potatoes?

There is no specific time when you should plant your potatoes. Nevertheless, you absolutely must ensure that the last frosts have passed. We usually wait until the end of March to start their cultivation.

Where to plant the potatoes?

The potato prefers loosened, light, sandy soils poor in limestone. Do not hesitate to enrich your soil with compost. The potato will be even happier. Plant the potatoes about 10 cm deep, always making sure that the sprouts are upwards. Try to keep a distance of 40 cm between each plant.

Which plants to choose?

When purchasing your potato plants, you will be offered two choices:

- germinated plants : these are the easiest to cultivate. They do not require any preparation and allow a quick and efficient start of your culture.

- non-germinated plants : they must be germinated for 4 to 5 weeks before they can be planted.

Potato varieties

There are many different varieties of potato. The choice of variety will depend on how you are going to use the potatoes:

- for fries : prefer Bintje , Mona Lisa and Samba

- for the puree : prefer the Bintje or the Manon which are quite floury

- for a tender flesh : prefer Agata , Mona Lisa or Charlotte which will accompany your dishes

- for firm flesh : prefer Belle de Fontenay (not Geneviève ...), Roseval (red skin color) or even Charlotte (not the one you put on your head but the one that tastes sweet) .

How to grow potatoes

Wait for the plants to reach about fifteen centimeters to butter the foot. You will then enlarge this stop as the plant grows. Get rid of the weeds that are sure to grow near your precious little potatoes. When you can harvest them will depend on the type of potato. This time goes from 2 to 3 months for early crops up to 5 months for later varieties.

Each plant will give you 1 to 2 kilos of potatoes. Store them in a dry place away from light.
